Michael A. Levy is of counsel to the Firm, focusing primarily on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) matters.
Since 1993, Michael has been an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association and a member of its Complex Commercial Case Panel. He has served as an arbitrator in a wide range of complex legal controversies, both domestic and international, involving such varied subject matters as land reclamation obligations from mining activities; telecommunications and satellite transponder transmission issues; business and professional practice shareholder and partnership disputes; tax shelter and securities cases; venture capital investments; real estate contract disputes; hazardous substance claims; and policyholder claims under health, disability and property insurance contracts, among others.
Michael is also a member of the Nassau County Bar Association Arbitration Panel and is President of Comprehensive Arbitration & Mediation Services, Inc., a private ADR provider.
After receiving his LL.M degree in Taxation from New York University School of Law, Michael began his legal career with a highly regarded New York City firm where he practiced corporate, securities and transactional law. After practicing for several years in Manhattan, Michael chose to give up the daily commute to the City, and he joined a firm on Long Island where he continued to practice corporate and tax law.
Michael’s prior transactional experience includes public offerings of securities; mergers, acquisitions; and real estate syndications. His prior tax experience includes estate planning and administration and drafting and administration of deferred compensation arrangements (including both defined contribution and defined benefit plans).
In 1979, Michael formed his own law firm. For nearly 25 years, he continued to practice as a transactional lawyer but also took on the mantle of his firm’s commercial and trusts and estates litigation. Michael is listed as lead counsel in several well-known and important reported court decisions involving shareholder disputes and corporate dissolutions. In 2014, Michael, with years of experience as a litigator, joined the Firm to pursue his keen interest in ADR – focusing on mediation in particular.
Michael has served as a mediator in a variety of legal disputes as diverse as breach of contract claims under hydro-electric power purchase agreements; multi-party cases alleging water contamination claims made by municipalities; shareholder and partnership disputes; civil rights actions brought in federal courts; personal injury cases; Storm Sandy insurance claims; and Title VII and other statutory labor and employment cases, among others.
Michael currently serves as a member of the Mediator Advisory Committee of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York; and in addition to serving as President of Comprehensive Arbitration & Mediation Services, Inc., a private ADR provider, he serves as a member on a number of other mediation rosters including:
Prior to earning his LL.M degree from NYU, Michael received his B.A. degree from the University of Connecticut, and his J.D. degree from Boston University School of Law.
